We finally have a slob for a Pope. Growing up Catholic, I was turned off by the high reverence and at times even the celebrity afforded the daily mass-celebrating priests, bishops, and cardinals. Now we had the man in charge riding common buses to church this week. It made me recall of when I heard Joan Osborne's lyrics to "What if God was One of Us?" and I wondered why the Catholic leadership denounced it at the time, because, to me, it spoke of a person willing to be with the "least" of us, as Jesus asked us to do. So, now for that reason, I am energized by this gesture of Pope Francis's, which can only further connect non-Catholic Christians to Catholics, reminding all of their belief in Jesus. So, here's to humility:
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
